Krung Thai Bank was established on March 14, 1966 from the merger between Agricultural Bank and Provincial Bank with the Finance Ministry holding the share majority. On August 17,1987, another bank, the Siam Bank was dissolved and assets assumed by the Krung Thai Bank as well.

Before 1966, the bank had 81 branches with total assets amounting to 4,316.4 million baht; 3,591.7 million baht in deposits and 2,312.9 million baht in loans. At present, the bank has 467 branches, including 91 in Bangkok, 367 in the provinces and 9 overseas. The bank now operates the largest number of provincial branches in Thailand.

Under a five-year plan beginning 1995, the bank will maintain the growth rates of deposits and loans at the same level of the system average; to enter into joint venture in business with good prospects which is complementary to commercial banking; to employ new technology to retain the competitive edge; to develop management quality and service efficiency; and to lower the operating cost.

The bank has three major policies: to respond to the economic policy of the state; to develop and enhance efficiency; and to improve the bank's image and credibility by performance.
